Dirty York – reader letter in York Press today.  “Can someone explain to me why York is so short of dustbins?  I have had visitors and local people talking to me recently about how dirty York is, the streets are littered with rubbish, there are no dustbins along Piccadilly and other streets and no street cleaners visible anywhere.”

“Today I saw people throw rubbish because they couldn’t find a dustbin.  The pavements are stained, the railings by the top of Piccadilly are bent and the paint has peeled off them, all this adds to the derelict look of York.”

“Some York residents tell me they are embarrassed to ask people to visit them as York is so dirty and visitors ask me why so few dustbins and streets so dirty.  We hear York businesses want to develop the centre and encourage tourism. But how can we do so if they are faced with bent cycle bars to lock up bicycles, bent railings that are scrappy, dirty pavements with urine stains, vomit and rubbish littering the pavements, and a distinct lack of dustbins.  How do other cities get it right?”
